IUI: Increasing Your Chances Of Conception.

IUI Treatment (Intra Uterine Insemination)is a procedure in which semen is artificially inserted into the uterus to achieve fertilization. One of the aims of IUI procudere is to increase the number of sperms reaching the fallopian tubes and thus increase the chances of pregnancy. The idea is to give the sperms an advantage in its journey to reach the egg and fertilize it.

Frquently Asked Questions

IUI is an option for those individuals who:

  • Suffer from unexplained infertility problems. Then IUI is usually the first option to be used.
  • Have a hostile cervical condition such as “unreceptive cervical mucus” that prevents sperms from getting into your uterus and ultimately into your fallopian tubes.
  • Suffer from endometriosis is a condition in which the layer of tissue that normally covers the inside of the uterus grows outside of it.
  • Suffer from ejaculation dysfunction.
  • Suffer from borderline abnormality in semen analysis.
The IUI procedure involves the following steps:
  • First, the female is given medication to stimulate ovulation. The maturity of the eggs is carefully monitored.
  • The IUI procedure is performed during ovulation
  • A washed semen sample is taken, and the sperms are separated from the seminal fluid. These sperms are placed directly in the uterus using a catheter and this procedure maximizes the number of sperm cells that are deposited in the uterus, thus increasing the chances of successful fertilization and pregnancy.

Some women experience cramping during the procedure and light bleeding afterward. You may have to lie down for about 15 to 45 minutes to give the sperms a chance to work.

Most of the side effects are caused by the fertility drugs taken and not due to the procedure itself

  1. Since the doctor prescribes fertility drugs to stimulate ovulation, the risk of multiples (becoming pregnant with twins, triplets and more children) does exist (around 10% – 30%).
  2. Fertility drugs can cause a number of side effects such as hot flashes, mood swings and depression, nausea, headaches and ovarian cysts to list a few of them

If IUI is performed each month, success rates may be close to 20% per cycle, depending on variables such as female age, reason for infertility, usage of drugs and other variables.
